Construction works take shape in seven more Dishi Na County Kitchens

The construction of seven additional kitchens that are planned to bolster the Nairobi County Government’s Dishi Na County school feeding program is well on course with the kitchens set to be completed in the next few weeks.

A spot check on the ongoing construction revealed a steady development of the kitchens with works at Ndururuno Primary School in Huruma, Mathare constituency already heading to completion.

The ongoing construction of a modern kitchen at Ndururuno Primary school once complete will have the kitchen prepare and provide hot nutritious lunch to all the primary school going children around the constituency at highly subsidized rate of 5 shillings.

The other kitchens are as well set to be completed before the third school term which will see the Dishi na County program reach an unprecedented 310,000 children.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja in March this year led the groundbreaking ceremonies for Seven Central Kitchens as part of the ongoing expansion of the program which is currently feeding 200,000 children in public primary and ECDE schools in Nairobi County.

These kitchens mark the third phase of the initiative, aiming to provide hot and nutritious meals to schoolchildren across Nairobi.

According to Governor Sakaja, upon completion, each sub-county in Nairobi will have its own central kitchen.

The seven schools selected for phase three of the kitchens are: Dandora 1 Primary School (Embakasi North), Donholm Primary School (Embakasi East), Mutuini Primary School (Dagoretti South), Uhuru Gardens Primary School (Langata), Ndururuno Primary School (Mathare), Umoja 1 Primary School (Embakasi West), and Zawadi Primary School (Kamkunji).

The program is aimed at ensuring that every pupil in Nairobi County primary schools are well fed toward realizing of 100% sustainance of pupils and improving of academic performance.

The Dishi na County started in 2023 with the construction of a mega kitchen in Industrial Area as well as 10 centralized kitchens which are located at Baba Dogo Primary School, Bidii Primary School, Kwa Njenga Primary, Farasi Lane Primary, Muthangari Primary, Kayole One Primary, Njiru Primary, Toi Primary, Roysambu Primary and Racecourse Primary.
