Garissa youth football tournament kickoffs at Iftin Ground

IFTIN – Garissa Youth Chairperson Mr. Nasteh Farah Buraze launched the much-anticipated youth sports tournament at Iftin Primary Ground on Saturday.

The debut match featured Barma FC against Leads FC, with 20 football clubs participating in the tournament, all aimed at promoting positive change.

The kickoff of the football tournament for the youth marks a milestone in efforts to empower local young people through positive activities during the holiday season.

Teenagers struggling with depression during the holidays may resort to drug use as a form of self-medication to alleviate emotional distress.

Mr. Nasteh Buraze said the tournament is designed to provide a constructive outlet for youth, fostering teamwork, discipline, and resilience, while steering them away from negative influences, including criminal activities, as well as drugs and substance abuse.

He said unfortunately, this coping mechanism is both dangerous and unsustainable, “as it only exacerbates the underlying issues and can lead to long-term addiction.”

The tournament launch, which attracted football enthusiasts, was honored by several distinguished guests dedicated to youth development and safety.

Garissa Youth Chairperson, Mr. Nasteh Buraze emphasized the critical role sports play in shaping young minds, offering them a productive and healthy way to spend their time.

“By providing our youth with the opportunity to engage in sports, we are helping them build vital life skills and reduce the likelihood of turning to criminal behavior,” he said.

“This tournament is a testament to our collective effort to create a brighter future for Garissa, where young people can thrive in a safe and supportive environment,” he added.

Garissa Township Assistant County Commissioner, Mr. Paul Omondi, and Garissa Township OCPD, Mr. Samuel K. Boit, attended the opening match on Saturday.

Garissa Township Assistant County Commissioner Mr. Paul Omondi underscored the importance of collaboration in tackling the challenges facing the youth in the county.

“Together, they are working towards creating a community where young people have the opportunity to develop both personally and professionally, away from the destructive influences of crime and violence,” said Mr. Omondi.

Township OCPD, Mr. Samuel K. Boit reaffirmed commitment to supporting the youth of the region, in a bid to ensure they have access to opportunities that foster growth, responsibility, and positive contributions to society.

“Empowering our youth today is the key to building a stronger, more vibrant community tomorrow,” he said during kickoff of the tournament.

“By providing opportunities for growth, responsibility, and leadership, we are shaping the future of our society,” added Mr. Samuel Boit.

Iftin East Location Chief, Mr. Dekow Eriyow, announced that the tournament will continue throughout the holiday season.

“Sports are more than just a game; they are a powerful tool for social change, offering our youth a chance to build a brighter, safer future for themselves and our community,” said the chief.
