The Center for Social Concern CFSC has trained journalists in Mangochi on the use of the Artificial Intelligence system AI and has cautioned them to use this technology properly in the field of their work as the technological landscape keeps changing.

CFSC Programs Manager Tobias Jere made the call at the end of a two day refresher training for journalists on Friday in the district after noting that AI is helping in information gathering when used properly.

He said journalists especially who are doing investigative stories can use the artificial intelligence tech to check some information they need on a particular issue and also has the capacity to help them do their work faster in tight work deadlines.

“As the world of technology continues expanding the Center for Social Concern is urging you journalists to utilize the AI to help you get the information you need.Utilise it when necessary especially when you need the information faster”,Jere said.

However,Jere has calledbon journalists to exercise caution when using this system as each and every information gathered from it still need verification to avoid compromising ethical standards.

“Much as you use this technology we are also reserving that you should always verify the information gathered. This will help you to maintain professionalism in the line of your duties and avoid conflicts with those concerned in your work”,he stated.

Speaking duning the training, one of the seasoned journalists in the country Rex Chikoko, highted the double-edged sword of Artificial Intelligence who unlocked the efficiency and exposed vulnerabilities involving the system.

He said in the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force, revolutionizing industries and redefining the way we live and work. However, like any powerful tool, he stated that AI comes with its share of benefits and drawbacks.

Chikoko noted that the AI automation may replace human workers, exacerbating unemployment and economic instability but still remains useful in a number of fields including in journalism.

He said that the  system can perpetuate existing biases, perpetuating social inequalities and can be vulnerable to cyber attacks and data breaches thereby compromising sensitive information.

“As journalists, it is crucial to understand the implications of AI on society and to report on its development and deployment in a responsible and balanced manner. You can use it responsibly to ensure that this powerful technology serves the greater good”,He explained.

CFSC organised the training in a bid to empower journalists  with reporting skills especially in areas of investigation inorder to promote peace and co-existence among people in Mangochi district which has a history of political and religious conflicts.
