In a tragic turn of events, Jays Excite Ltd, a bakery owned by the former Acting Director of Medical Services, Dr. Njoroge Ndungu, was set on fire in Nanyukitown,Laikipia County.
The attack has left over 80 employees jobless and caused extensive destruction to the Njoroge family’s properties.
Jays Excite Ltd, renowned for its popular Jays Loaf bread and pastries in Nyeri, Nanyuki, Meru, and other regions around Mount Kenya, was reduced to rubble.
The incident is believed to be linked to youth frustrations and a perceived vendetta against the owner for opposing their demands for change. Before setting the premises ablaze using petrol, the attackers looted baked goods, including bread, buns, cakes, cookies, and other pastries.
Machinery that could not be moved and a fleet of delivery vehicles were also destroyed in the fire. The flames were reportedly visible from the showground gate, stretching as far as the Isiolo–Nanyuki road bridge.
No casualties were reported, but the incident is part of a broader pattern of unrest, with the youth shifting their focus from random attacks on luxury vehicles, such as Prado V8s believed to carry politicians, to targeting specific properties.
Local leaders, including Members of Parliament and clergy, have condemned the attack. They have urged for respect and dignity to be accorded to leaders and their property, highlighting the importance of resolving grievances through peaceful means.
This devastating event marks a significant loss for Dr. Njoroge and his family, as well as the employees and community who relied on the bakery.
